Stethoscope: How Does it Work?

The word “stethoscope” derives from the Greek words: “tassel” (meaning strap) and “sphynx” (meaning heart). An instrument that is used for the assessment and diagnosis of various diseases and their symptoms. Stethoscopes are flexible, light-weight medical instruments. They consist of a probe with a sensor, which is called the diopters, and a speaker, which is called the stethoscope nozzle. The diopters and the stethoscope nozzle can be moved up or down to get a better hearing of the sounds from the various parts of the body. The stethoscope has a diaphragm attached to the probe and an opening for the diaphragm located through the tube or ear piece. The stethoscope can magnify sounds up to a hundred times or more.

Stethoscopes are usually placed behind the ear near the back of the neck in order to have a clear view of the lungs, trachea and the abdomen. However, in the case of children, stethoscopes should be placed behind the neck, behind the belly button and in front of the nose. Stethoscopes can also be placed above the belly button, behind the ears (for children), or under the navel (for adults). The stethoscope can also be placed inside the vagina to view the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus. The doctor can use a combination of the different parts of the stethoscope depending on the diagnosis.

The major parts of the stethoscope

In general, the major parts of the stethoscope are the diaphragm, the probe, the air valve, the piston and the tubing. These parts function together and provide the correct sound for the medical procedure. The diaphragm is the large cloth-like bag that is used to cover and protect the lungs, trachea and the abdomen. This piece of medical apparatus also serves as the diaphragm’s seat. When the stethoscope’s piston moves, the diaphragm moves with it, supporting the lung’s movement.

Once the diaphragm is removed, the piston can move out and the tube’s end can then come into contact with the chest wall and the lungs. The stethoscope’s airflow comes into contact with the chest wall and the sounds that it gathers are interpreted by the stethoscope’s sensor. Based on the noises that are gathered, the doctor can hear from the chest whether there are any abnormalities in the breathing process or not. The next step after this is the oxygen tank located on top of the torso.

When a person has a hearing loss, it can be very difficult for him or her to hear the regular sounds that people make especially those sounds that are embedded in his everyday life. Because of this, he may be prone to medical conditions that can even lead to his death. For example, a person who experiences hearing loss will be unable to hear heartbeats and blood flow. In addition, he will not be able to distinguish between low and high sounds. This is why it is important that all people stay away from audiologists as they can provide some inaccurate and incorrect readings.

Digital stethoscope & traditional stethoscope

To compensate for these limitations, an individual can choose from two different stethoscopes, the digital stethoscope and the traditional stethoscope. Digital stethoscopes are less complex and are more lightweight and portable compared to traditional ones. This is why they can be brought around easier and are perfect for individuals who want to listen to heart sounds and other sounds within reach. Although they do not offer any extra features, they are often favored by audiologists because of their accurate readings. However, they are a bit more expensive than traditional stethoscopes and can be more costly if one purchases the device online.

The next electronic stethoscopes available are those that have built in amplifiers. These kinds of devices are commonly called “stethoscopes with amplifiers”. There are actually two types of amplifiers; digital and analog. Although digital amplifiers tend to produce higher volume levels, it can also help lessen background sounds which can result in inaccurate readings. Usually, digital amplifiers can provide the same kind of amplification as of traditional stethoscopes. They are, however, more expensive and may require a dealer’s authorization to purchase.
